Faces Places, a film by Agnès Varda and JR

2017 Jun 28 - 22:11

Faces Places, which received the winning prize L'Oeil d'Or of the best documentary at Cannes Festival 2017, is coming out in theaters today in France.
Agnès Varda and JR have similarities: passion and questioning on images in general, and more precisely on places and devices used to show them, share them and exhibit them.
Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create outdoor pastings.
When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a movie in France, far from cities, travelling with JR's (magical) photo truck. Wether it was random encounters or prepared, they opened up to other people, listened to them, photographed them, and sometime pasted them.
The movie also tells the story of their friendship, which grew along the shooting, between surprises and teasing, laughing at their differences.

  • JR at Palais de Tokyo: Chroniques de Clichy-Montfermeil

    2017 Apr 7 - 16:39

For his third intervention at Palais de Tokyo, JR unveils a monumental fresco of over 150 m2, forming a singular portrait of the inhabitants of Clichy-Montfermeil (Seine-Saint-Denis), suburbs where the popular rebellions that shook France in 2005 began.

After being displayed at Palais de Tokyo from April 2nd to April 13th, the work will then be installed durably at the CiteÌ des Bosquets (Montfermeil).

JR's GIANTS in RIO de Janeiro for the Olympics

    2016 Aug 16 - 14:25

As part of an artist-in-residence program of the Olympics, JR has created new installations taking place all over Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympic Games.

The idea is to photograph athletes whose identity is blurred behind the “perfect motion†from an instantly recognisable Olympic event: diving, the high jump and the swimming section of the triathlon.

Rather than working with star athletes whose success makes them household names, JR is interested in athletes who are little-known in the eyes of the world yet sublimate the physical language of sport and thus form a distillation of the universality of the Olympic movement.

The images obtained are thus being installed in black and white on ultra-large scaffolds which themselves form an integral part of the installation, being the only things capable of supporting such large pictures. Each installation offers a plurality of viewpoints from both up close and far away.

The three Giants are in Flamengo, Botafogo and Barra da Tijuca.

The Standing March was a major public artwork from a collaboration with Darren Aronofsky exhibited in Paris during the UN’s COP 21 climate conference. The video projection was created to remind leaders that the world is watching as they gather to negotiate a deal aimed at keeping global warming below 2°C. It was projected at night on buildings including the Assemblée Nationale, The Louvre, The Pantheon, The Musée Picasso, and The Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve over the time spanning the conference. Music accompanied the projection, created by 3D from Massive Attack.
